The Special Fluids unit uses HDA technology (Hydro De-Aromatization) and the expertise gained by TOTAL Fluides from its Oudalle site, located in Normandy, France. Having a plant in the United States gives the Special Fluids division of TOTAL a solid advantage in terms of responsiveness and logistics in the country.
The plant has an annual capacity of 250,000 metric tons.
Bayport plant, hydrocarbon solvents "made in USA"
The Bayport HDA plant is a “specialties refinery”: it produces a wide range of high value-added hydrocarbon fluids. It implements state-of-the-art patented technology and operates non-stop (24/7).
The two major stages of production are
- high pressure hydrogenation which provides products with very high purity
- narrow-cut distillation that leads to fluids particularly adapted to customer expectations
40 hydrocarbon fluids are produced in HDA Bayport. They are used across a wide spectrum of industries including, but not limited to, mining, drilling and fracking, crop protection, water treatment, printing inks, paints and coatings, and cosmetics.

Safety and environment:
Health and safety aspects of the products are taken into account from the design to the development and in every stage of the production. The security of activities and people's health are priorities of the TOTAL group.
Location of the HDA Bayport plant:
The new Special Fluids plant is located on our US Refining and Chemicals High Density Polyethylene production site in Bayport, TX.
